The leather manufacturing process is divided into three sub-processes: preparatory stages, tanning and crusting. All true leathers will undergo these sub-processes. Surface coating may be added into the sequence. The list of operations that leathers undergo vary with the type of leather.

This process includes e.g soaking, liming, de-liming, bating, a number of mechanical operations and pickling. The hide/collagen is made ready for the tannage.
Wet-blue skins are then re-tanned inside special drums. This part of the process gives the leather more mechanical resistance and uniformity, but also softness, elasticity and lightness.
Finishing determines the appearance of the final surface of the leather and the surface properties This includes coloring, waterproofing, wax dressings, and other mechanical processing.
