Preserved hides are soaked in water to rehydrate them, making them pliable and ready for the subsequent steps. This process helps remove dirt, blood, and salt.

Hides are treated with lime and other chemicals to remove hair, epidermal tissues, and residual fats. This step also loosens the fibers and prepares the hides for tanning.

Mechanical processes are used to remove excess tissue and fat, resulting in a cleaner surface. Hides might also be split into layers to create different thicknesses of leather.
